What we teach at San Diego Swordschool

Il Fior Di Battaglia by Fiore de'i Liberi circa 1409

San Diego Swordschool focuses heavily on the teachings of Master Fiore de'i Liberi, who was alive at the turn of the 15th century. He traveled much of the then Holy Roman Empire learning the art of swordplay from a variety of masters before he laid down his own teachings in his series of treatises. Il Fior Di Battaglia (The Flower of Battle) was his most complete and decisive work, showcasing an incredible martial system known as  l’arte dell’armizare (The Art of Arms).

Fiore De'i Liberi's system of Armazare is a comprehensive and sophisticated martial arts discipline originating from the 14th century. As a masterful synthesis of armed and unarmed combat techniques, Armazare offers practitioners a versatile and adaptable approach to self-defense and personal growth. Drawing from Fiore's manuscripts, such as the renowned "Fior di Battaglia," students delve into diverse areas of expertise, including Abrazare (grappling), Daga (dagger), Spada (sword), and Azza (poleaxe), among others.

The Armazare system places a strong emphasis on strategic thinking, body mechanics, and fluid movement, allowing practitioners to develop a deep understanding of their own capabilities and their opponents' vulnerabilities. By engaging with this rich and time-tested tradition, students of Fiore De'i Liberi's Armazare not only connect with an influential piece of European martial arts history but also unlock their full potential as modern-day warriors.
