What we teach at San Diego Swordschool

Il Fior Di Battaglia by Fiore Di Liberi circa 1409

San Diego Swordschool focuses heavily on the teachings of Master Fiore Di Liberi, who was alive at the turn of the 15th century. He traveled much of the then Holy Roman Empire learning the art of swordplay from a variety of masters before he laid down his own teachings in his series of treatises. Il Fior Di Battaglia (The Flower of Battle) was his most complete and decisive work, showcasing an incredible martial system known as  l’arte dell’armizare (The Art of Arms).

Armizare is a fully-fledged martial system, incorporating unarmed combat, dagger, sword-in-one-hand, longsword, polearm, spear, and mounted combat in one wholistic approach. Fiore was a master combatant, who understood not only the physical needs of swordsmanship, but the psychological, emotional, and meditative aspects as well.

San Diego Swordschool follows in his footsteps as we attempt to recover, illuminate, and experience everything that Fiore had to teach. With a book in one hand, and a sword in the other we meet weekly to learn from a master of the past.
